Our small museum is an island treasure that covers, in chronological order, over 14,000 years of Charlotte Harbor history. Even though the museum is contained in only four rooms (the fifth room is a unique gift shop), every room is full of interesting information. Whether you seek information on the Calusa, local fishing, Gasparilla Island lighthouses, Boca Grande social history or local natural history, you will find something that appeals to you and your entire family. Children especially love our “please touch” area full of fossils, shells and bones. And for added fun and to enhance your visit, we will soon be adding QR codes to the museum! Keep checking our website or Facebook page to see when they will go “live!” For us laymen, QR codes look like UPC codes and once scanned with “Smartphones” take you to photographs or other fascinating information not shown in the museum.
If you have not been to our museum, during season we have a great group of docents (tour guides) who will help make your visit to the museum a pleasurable one. You can request a tour or just ask questions if you prefer to explore the museum on a self-guided tour. Oftentimes we have special presentations or our weekly on-site historians who will delight you with stories from the past. Customized tours for groups are available by request during the museums open Hours of Operation. If you are coming to the museum as a group or know you would like a customized tour, please call or email us well in advance to book your trip. The Group Tour form can be completed by selecting this link: Group Tour
We know the most disappointing visit is when you arrive to find us closed or not having a docent available. We really do not like to disappoint anyone. It is always best to check this website or call in advance to find out our hours and what is currently happening at the museum. During season we are open daily, but off-season we are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. See our Hours of Operation under VISIT. Please also keep in mind we always close at 4:00pm regardless of season, and the museum is closed the entire month of August for maintenance and on all major holidays.
We really look forward to your visit! If there is anything we can do to make it more enjoyable, please send us an email at: email@example.com.
